New & Experimental

Having a “line of work” for sale is only one aspect of who I am as a weaver. Part of the joy of living in my creativity is that there are constantly many ideas coming and going. Far more than I could ever put on the loom. This year I gave myself permission to play more than usual. I got serious about knitting last year, and then I took up spinning yarn. I have also gone down the rabbit hole of yarn swapping and because of these things, I have had the amazing fortune of so many different yarns going through my hands.

Every piece starts with the yarn and I believe that every yarn has something that it wants to be, something that will truly bring out its life. At times it is more complex, but other times, simplicity is the key…to lighten up on design so that the beauty can come through.

The first four photos below are part of my recent explorations. The next two are photos of dishtowels that I have woven, the kind of thing that I weave for friends and family, but that I don’t necessarily put up for sale. The bottom two rows are a collection of rag rugs and wall hangings that I have made through the years. Weavings made from ripped up old clothes. I don’t often get the opportunity to create this sort of work, but I love the effect when I do.

I am currently in the last throws of preparation for the 85th Annual Craftsmen’s Fair (Sunapee, NH). I think that I have finally figured out what the twenty skeins of Malabrigo Silkpaca want to become and I am staying up late at night to get it finished. There is something deep inside of me that absolutely needs this to come to fruition and share with the world.
